Gold, Silver, Black or Rose Gold: Choosing Your Watch Colour
In short: match your watch to the metals you already wear, then use your skin tone as a tiebreaker. Warm undertones suit gold and rose gold, cool undertones suit silver and black, and neutral undertones suit everything. Silver is the safest all rounder, gold is the most confident, black is the most modern and rose gold is the softest.
Every Hartley watch comes in four case colours: gold, silver, black and rose gold. Choosing between them is usually the hardest part of buying a watch. Here is a simple way to decide.
Step 1: start with what you already wear
The easiest rule is to match the metals you wear most. Look at your rings, necklace, bracelet, glasses frames and belt buckles. If they are mostly yellow gold, a gold watch will look natural. If they are silver, platinum or white gold, choose silver. Matching metals makes everything look intentional and pulled together.
If you wear a mix, or no jewellery at all, move on to step two.
Step 2: check your skin tone
A quick test: look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural daylight.
- Greenish veins (warm undertone): gold and rose gold tend to glow against warmer skin.
- Bluish or purple veins (cool undertone): silver and black usually look sharpest.
- Hard to tell (neutral undertone): lucky you. Every colour works.
This is a guide, not a rule. Plenty of people with cool undertones love gold, and that is the right choice if it is what you want to wear every day.
Step 3: think about your wardrobe
Consider the colours you wear most. Navy, brown, olive, cream and denim pair beautifully with gold and rose gold. Grey, white, black and blue are effortless with silver and black. If your wardrobe is mostly black, a black or silver watch will feel at home, while gold adds a deliberate contrast.
What each colour says
Silver
The classic. Silver goes with every outfit and every other metal, and is the easiest colour to wear every day. It reads as clean, professional and understated. If you are buying your first watch, or buying for someone else and you are unsure, choose silver.
Gold
Warm, confident and timeless. Gold has made a big comeback, and it looks especially good with navy, brown, cream and black clothing, and with a tan. A gold watch is a statement, so it works best when the rest of your accessories are simple.
Black
Modern and understated. A black case reads as stealthy and pairs effortlessly with dark clothing and casual wear. On the Legacy, a black case makes the white skeleton movement stand out even more, which is why it is a favourite for people who want the mechanism to be the hero.
Rose gold
Softer than yellow gold, with a warm pink tone. Rose gold is popular with both men and women and looks beautiful against neutral colours, blush tones, greys and denim. It feels a little more fashion led while still being classic.
Dial colour matters too
Case colour is only half the story. A black dial is easier to read in bright light and looks more formal. A white dial feels lighter and fresher. On our Heritage, the rose gold case comes with either a black or a white dial, so you can choose the mood.
Then choose the strap
The strap can change the feel completely. A gold case on a black leather strap is more subtle than on a gold bracelet. A silver case on a brown leather strap feels warmer and more vintage. Because every strap uses quick release pins, you can start with one look and add another later. Read our strap guide for ideas.
